Imagine yourself practicing mindfulness. What are you doing? Are you sitting in a candlelit room and chanting “ohm” over and over? While meditation is a great mindfulness practice, it isn’t the “be all and end all” of mindfulness. Actually, it’s a rather small piece of the big picture.
What if I told you that you could be mindful almost anywhere?
In this post, I'm going to show you the Top Ten Mindfulness Practices so that you can start being mindful today! But, before we get into HOW to be Mindful, we must learn what it is to be mindful.
What is Mindfulness?
Mindfulness is more than just focusing on your breathing. Mindfulness is being totally present in the current moment. Whatever you feel, think, see or hear, you’re observing, but you’re not judging or overthinking it. At the risk of sounding clichè, you're living in the moment.
Have you ever been so immersed in something that you don't realize what is going on in the background? You could be there for hours without knowing it. You're not hypnotized, you're aware of what is happening within you, but nothing outside of that matters.
Benefits of Practicing Mindfulness:
In my own experience, I can honestly tell you that mindfulness can be life-changing! I used to have a really hard time focusing on things. Living with depression and BPD made it difficult for me to have any true peace of mind, so I was always edgy and became overwhelmed very easily. It took nothing to make me lose focus or forget things entirely.
Mindfulness can be beneficial to everyone; children, adults, people who live with mental illness. Anyone can be mindful; all it takes is a little focus. Mindfulness has been said to benefit people that have a short attention span and can even improve your memory!

How It Works:
You need to practice Mindfulness with a nonjudgmental mind, blocking any kind of thoughts or distractions that may try to steal your focus. If your focus does slip, gently bring it back. It's effortless; all you have to do is keep your mind clear. If that's not an easy thing for you to do, it's great practice, just keep trying.

Here are My Top 10 Mindfulness Practices!
1. Breathing Exercises
Breathing Exercises focus your attention on the simple rhythm of your inhalation and exhalation.
You can try this by holding your index finger over one nostril while you're inhaling, and the other while you're exhaling.
You could also say "inhale/exhale" as you're breathing if it helps to keep your attention longer.
Yoga is a gentle form of exercise that combines your movement with your breathing to keep the mind and body in tune. With yoga, you can relax both your mind and body at the same time.
There are different styles of yoga to choose from to suit your specific needs Restorative and Yin Yoga practices are my personal favorites for mindfulness.
Meditation is simply defined as focusing on your breath or something else like an affirmation.
Breathing exercises are a form of meditation, but there are a variety of meditation styles to suit every need.
If you're new to meditation, try a guided meditation. You can find guided meditations on Spotify, Apple Store, Google Play Store, or anywhere you stream podcasts or music.
4. A Nature Walk
Nature has so many benefits to offer us. Whether it's a sunny day, seeing wildlife, or just the calmness of a forest clearing; nature can bring joy to everyone!
Go outside and get some fresh air. It's not only physically good for you, but a peaceful background is a great place to be mindful!
5. Cleaning & Doing Chores
I know what you're thinking. How can doing chores bring me peace of mind? Well, it's not the act of doing all of your chores, but to focus on each task separately.
Instead of thinking about the whole To-Do List, focus on clearing your mind while doing each task. When you take things one at a time, you'll find that you focus better and the task doesn't seem as difficult.
Mindfulness is just one of the many benefits of journaling. When you write about your life, your emotions, and other things, it doesn't weigh on your mind as much.

7. While You're Working
Much like practicing mindfulness while doing chores, the method here is to simply focus on the task at hand, rather than the tasks ahead.
Remember to take everything one step at a time. It's a great way to prevent overwhelm yourself or burning out!
Using art is a terrific way to gain a little peace of mind by using your creative skills. Your focus will come naturally when you're bringing something from your imagination to life.
Creativity requires attention and focus, so the two go hand in hand. Whether it’s writing, drawing or even knitting, you can reap tons of benefits from creative mindfulness.
9. Adult Colouring Books
Adult Coloring Books are another form of creative mindfulness. Much like how we did as children, but with intricate designs to keep our focus a little longer.
These designs are created with adult mindfulness in mind. Not only is it relaxing, but it’s also actually a really fun way to let off some steam and clear your mind!
Ah, reading. A timeless method of relaxation. There’s truly nothing like curling up and getting lost in a good book.
This is probably the most well-known way to clear your mind, other than meditation.
Books have the power to take us to different places, teach us new things.
